The Development Committee of Orissa State Badminton Association has passed its “Vision 2020 -24 document” with a detailed blueprint to upgrade the sport of badminton in the state and have a vibrant badminton environment. OSBA will be working in association with the Sports & Youth Affairs Department, Government of Odisha in all spheres of development of the sport. The Odisha Government is creating a conducive eco-system for the sport of badminton and its overall development.

The document, an ambitious plan to broad base and raise the bar of badminton in Odisha details key components which the Orissa State Badminton Association will emphasize upon in a structured, realistic and practical manner in an attempt to elevate and popularise the sport.

It is a fact that Badminton has grown phenomenally in India and in Odisha it is a rising sport. Few of our shuttlers have performed exceptionally well to reach National levels and the next few years will be crucial to scout talent and nurture them. Odisha has the potential to be among the top Badmintion States in India, Late Shri Sanath Mishra, a multiple time National Champion and currently Rutaparna Panda who is representing India in Women’s Doubles & Mixed Doubles event have shown the way. The Vision document gives a sense of purpose and direction to us. Our principal focus in next four years will be to develop the sport from block level of the district, Coaching and Player development, Coaches Training Programmes & Technical Official assessment programmes will be the main stay of our efforts.

Apart from the ambitious feeder centres plans, the Blueprint highlights several other key components. AirBadminton, a new format launched globally by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) in 2019, played in an outdoor area, lawn or beach, will be an added attractive feature to popularize the game in blocks and coastal areas.

The Vision document mentions many more short term as well as long term objectives. Inclusive participation which presents badminton as an inclusive sport for all, Enhancing Fan Base & Stakeholder engagement, Partnerships with Private and Corporate structures, the upcoming HIgh Performance Center at Bhubaneswar, School level development and Fund raising being few more of them. It was also discussed and finalised to strengthen the partneship between OSBA & the State Government.

In addition there are few other components and commissions which will be created for boosting Workshops and Clinics, Technical Officer’s Development, Communications & Public Relations, Badminton Library, Awards & Recognitions, School Games, etc. The domestic tournament structure will also see a revamp with a Under 11 category included at State Level, apart from District and Block level activities with AirBadminton.

“The Vision document provides a blueprint upon which badminton will be nurtured and promoted over the period from 2020 – 24 and this will set a benchmark for the future as well. We may not be able to launch all of these plans at the ground level immediately due to the current pandemic. However, there are many areas where we can begin work on and build a strong base through which badminton can rise, thrive and turn into a revolution in Odisha. To achieve our objectives, we will work hand in hand with the Department of Youth & Sports Services of Odisha, Khelo India & Department of School and Mass Education of Odisha and invite all stake holders to play a part in the progress of badminton in Odisha”
